How to prepare for the exam

Once again, my heartiest congratulations on completing the Pure Maths 2 curriculum. P2 is a challenging course, and you may rightly feel a sense of achievement for having come this far. Your work is not finished just yet, but if you have been working intensively on your maths it will be worth taking a well-earned break and relaxing for a couple of days.

When you are rested, you need to get back to work for the final few weeks of preparation before your exam. (I hope you do have at least a few weeks available!) This phase is of crucial importance. It is here that you will identify any concepts and techniques that you didn't quite master, and where you will sharpen up your skills in preparation for the final exam. Proper preparation during these final weeks can easily make a difference of 20% - 30% on your final mark.

In order to prepare effectively, please make sure that you read this article, which will explain to you how to make the most of your revision period. If you follow those guidelines you will be well on your way to an excellent result.

Please also take note that Cambridge is moving increasingly towards questions which test the application of well-known concepts to unfamiliar problems. This means that you must know the concepts and techniques well, but you must also be prepared for questions that may look strange or unfamiliar. There's no need to panic when you see such a question; just think carefully about what you are asked to prove or work out, and then decide which techniques you need to apply. When answering a question, especially if it looks unfamiliar, ask yourself:

  1. What do I need to calculate or prove?
  2. Which sections of the curriculum might be applicable?
  3. What are the methods and techniques that look most promising here? Be prepared to try one thing and then another if the first approach appears not to be leading you to the correct answer.

May I encourage you not to look towards the exam with fear and trepidation, but to view it as an opportunity to celebrate all you have learned!

Once again, thank you for making this journey with Imago Eduction!
