Classes for 2022

Welcome!

Thank you for your interest in our classes for 2022. Our mission is to empower homeschooling families for joyful and effective learning that prepares young people for a life of purpose and fulfilment. One of the ways we do this is through our face-to-face and online classes. The whole teaching programme is designed to help students, not only to achieve their best results, but also to gain a love for learning and an appreciation of their subjects. All our courses should be seen as a partnership between tutors, parents and students, with a focus on the students’ needs and on the most effective approach to helping them build knowledge and mastery of their subjects.

Mathematics

Junior mathematics

We have become aware of a need amongst some homeschooling families for assistance with junior maths. (Not all parents feel competent to teach their children maths!) We are offering two junior maths programmes to assist with this need. They will be held online to eliminate the need for daily travel.

Proper foundations are essential in maths. At the junior level the student must master the basics of number operations, fractions, percentages, etc. These classes will help to provide those foundations so that maths becomes a joy rather than a mystery.

These classes will be presented by Vehlia Button.

 Senior mathematics

Maths is another of those subjects which is essential for a wide range of careers. Though challenging for many students, it can be mastered with the right guidance and support — and hard work by the student.

Our senior maths classes cover Grade 9 right up to A-Level. The Grade 9 course uses the Saxon Algebra 1 text book, which creates an excellent foundation for IG work the following year; the IG, AS- and A-Level courses follow the Cambridge International curriculum.

The senior maths classes will be presented by Bruce Button.

Placement assessment

When building a house you have no choice but to proceed layer by layer. You can’t suspend the roof in mid-air! So too with learning: students become frustrated and discouraged — even bewildered — if they have to attempt more advanced work when they are not well-grounded in the fundamentals. Thus we need to ensure that students are ready for each class so that learning is enjoyable and effective.

This principle is especially true for English and Mathematics. We therefore require new students who wish to enrol for these two subjects either to provide evidence of the level of competence they have achieved (e.g. exam result, school report) or to complete a placement test before final registration. Depending on the result of the placement test, we may recommend a course different from the one selected.

All students wishing to enrol for an AS-Level course must either have completed an official IG examination or must write an AS-Level placement test. Students wishing to enrol for AS-Level should have achieved at least a C for their IG exams. If IG exams were written in the current session (i.e. Oct/Nov 2021), we can allow provisional acceptance until the IG results are received.

The placement assessment is part of the key to unblocking the channels of learning.

Cost: R 450 per subject.

What do our tutoring packages include?

Most importantly, we see ourselves as partners with you and your child in the learning process. Each of us has an indispensable role to play.

At the heart of the whole process is the student. Nobody but the student can build the knowledge and understanding that he or she requires. So, our aim is to activate the student’s inner genius — the genius that can do what nobody else can do! How do we do this?

  1. We will hold a special workshop at the beginning of the year to help our students understand their inner genius and how to activate it. This includes guidance on the right attitude to work, effective methods of study and the productive use of time. Often, it is a lack of these skills more than difficulty with the subject that hampers learning and progress.
  2. We provide teaching and learning activities which are carefully designed to help your child build knowledge and understanding. This enables him/her to master the subject by building understanding step by step and layer by layer.
  3. We break up the curriculum into manageable pieces, right down to the level of what work must be done each day and each week. This leads to meaningful progress without being overwhelmed by the volume of work.
  4. We provide homework activities and tests that are assessed regularly. This kind of feedback is essential for identifying misconceptions and difficulties early on so that they can be corrected before they become a major problem.
  5. During the revision and exam preparation phase, we show students in detail how to approach their exams and answer the questions in the required way. We also provide feedback through the marking of completed past papers.

As much as we want to do our part in helping your child, there are some things we just cannot do! Your role as parent is crucial, and we provide support, feedback and encouragement to help you in this role.

  1. We will be holding special parents’ workshops at the beginning of the year to explain how we, you and your child can work together as a team in accomplishing your child’s goals.
  2. We have a reporting system that will allow you to check on your child’s progress with assignments and tests at any time.
  3. Where necessary, we will contact you to discuss specific issues and concerns regarding your child’s progress.
  4. Where necessary, we can put you in touch with experts who can give specialized advice (e.g. career guidance, etc.).
