Introduction to the lesson
Well done on finishing chapter ten! By now you should be starting to have a good feel for AS biology. Revise what you have learned in this chapter and make sure that you understand the causes, pathogens, symptoms, prevention and treatment involved in each disease. Pay particular attention to the pathogen -- you will need to know its scientific name -- and whether it is a virus, a bacteria or a plasmodium.
Summary
Read the summary on p.217-218 of your text book.
End-of-chapter questions
- Answer the end-of-chapter questions (p.219-221 of your text book).
- Mark your work (refer to the CD-ROM for answers) and make sure you understand what you did wrong.
Useful resources for chapter ten
Tom Dare: a good summary of AIDS, TB and Malaria. Take note that he does not cover cholera, measles or smallpox.
Mr Pollock: a summary of cholera.
Revisify: a nice explanation of malaria. It's more detail than you necessarily need to know for AS biology but it will help you ground what you do need to know.
Simpleshow Foundation: a simple explanation of HIV/AIDS
Khan Academy: an explanation of TB. Includes causes and means of spreading
Ms Cooper: a detailed explanation of antibiotics. This video might be easier to understand after you have gone through chapter 11.
