Introduction to the lesson

In chapter one we learned about the overall structure of the cell. In chapter two we studied biological molecules and in chapter three looked a bit more in detail at one particular kind of protein. In this chapter we will begin to combine our knowledge of cell structure with our knowledge of biological molecules as we study how biological molecules come together to make up the cell surface membrane which surrounds and protects the cell, controlling what goes into and out of the cell. This lesson is just a brief overview to prepare you for what you will be learning in the chapter.

Preparing for the chapter

  • Why do you think the cell membrane is important? (What role does it play for the cell?)
  • What are the three ways that substances cross the cell membrane?
  • How does the cell membrane control what enters and leaves the cell?
  • What do you think the cell membrane is composed of? Why?

First reading of the chapter:

Skim through the chapter (as explained in chapter one).

Second reading of the chapter

Now read the chapter (p.73-89). It is not necessary to take notes as you will work through each section in more detail in the following lessons.

Closing

As you end this lesson, ask yourself:

  1. What new things have I learned today?
  2. What did I know already?
  3. What still confuses me?

NOTE: This chapter covers 4 of the Cambridge International AS Biology (9700) syllabus 2016-2018 (p.22).
