Introduction to the lesson
You have now reached the end of the chapter. Make sure that your mindmap is completed and that you have understood all the information. You will need to know the structural formulae of all the molecules you have learned in this chapter so find a way of memorizing them (e.g. draw flashcards and stick them on the wall.). The purpose of this lesson is to consolidate your knowledge and check your understanding. Below are links to some useful videos. Sometimes the book's explanation is difficult to follow and it is nice to hear someone's voice. This is a particularly difficult chapter to understand but a very important one so use these videos to help you to understand it better.
Summary
Read the summary on p.48-49 of your text book.
End-of-chapter questions
- Answer the end-of-chapter questions (p.49-52).
- Mark your work (refer to the CD-ROM for answers) and make sure you understand what you did wrong.
Useful resources for chapter two
Carbohydrates
Tom Dare: a useful explanation of monosaccharides and disaccharides (including a brief explanation of monomers, dimers and polymers. He also explains what exactly a reducing carbon is. This is not covered in the textbook but is very useful when you get to the exams so take note of it.
Tom Dare: a useful explanation of polysaccharides. He explains the four polysaccharides that you need to know in detail for AS biology.
Lipids
Tom Dare: a useful explanation of lipids. The advantage of Tom Dare's videos is that he more or less follows the AS biology curriculum.
Proteins
Bozeman Science: a nice explanation of amino acid bonding and the four structures of proteins. You will learn more about how exactly the process of protein synthesis occurs in the ribosome in chapter 6 so don't worry too much about that.
Mr Pollock: an explanation of the four levels of protein structure. Make sure you understand these four levels well. It can be a bit confusing at first but you will need to know it well for the exam.
Water
CrashCourse: a somewhat lighthearted, but quite good explanation of most of the properties of water that you need to know.
