Introduction to the lesson

Mitosis and DNA replication are some of the most important processes within the body. As you will see in your reading, the preservation of the full genetic code during cell replication is vital for survival. In this lesson you will study how the body is designed to ensure that no part of the genetic code is lost in replication. You will also be introduced to stem cells and the controversial topic of stem cell therapy.

Telomeres

Read the section “The significance of telomeres” in your text book (p.102-103).

Learning Activity 1

Answer the following questions in your exercise book.

Stem cells

Read the section “Stem cells” on p.103 of your text book.

Learning Activity 2

Answer the following questions in your exercise book.

  1. Describe what stem cells are and how cells differentiate?
  2. How do you respond to the idea of stem cell therapy?
  3. Answer Question 5.6 on p.103 of your text book.
